Recent studies show that omega-3 supplements taken for a period of three months have a beneficial effect on symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

A recent study at the University of South Australia showed an improvement in behavioral and learning problems in children with ADHD when taking omega-3 fish oil combined with evening primrose oil. Of the 132 children tested, almost 50 percent showed improvement during the study. This equates to a success rate greater than Ritalin, the most common ADHD drug. A similar study, published in the May 5, 2005 issue of Pediatrics backs up these results. According to Paul Montgomery, D.Phil, "A lack of certain polyunsaturated fatty acids may contribute to dyslexia and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder."

Omega-3 Beneficial to Brain

Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have beneficial effects on many of the body systems, but it is its role in the brain that is probably responsible for the beneficial effects on ADHD. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in brain function, memory and intelligence. It has a beneficial effect on depression and behavioral problems as well.

Benefits to Body

Controlling ADHD symptoms with fish oil supplements also benefits other organ systems such as the heart and joints. In contrast, Ritalin and other ADHD drugs can have major risks and side effects, especially when taken long term.

Experts are recommending that kids with ADHD take a quality vitamin product along with fish oil and evening primrose oil supplements. More research is needed in this area, but a healthy diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids is beneficial to both children and adults.

How Much Fish Oil is Needed?

More research is needed to determine the best dosage of fish oil, especially for children; however, Montgomery recommends "supplementation with omega-3s is the only sensible way forward. One gram per day seems right for most children." He goes on to recommend an omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of four to one. Most supplements contain both omega-3 and omega-6, check the data for the ratio.

Mercury Considerations

Beneficial omega-3 fatty acids are plentiful in cold water fish such as salmon and cod, as well as in flax seeds and walnuts. Incorporating these foods into your diet several times a week will boost your blood levels of these protective fatty acids. Flax seed oil supplements are available to ensure a steady supply of omega-3 fatty acids for those who do not like fish or who worry about levels of toxins in fish. Evening primrose oil supplies beneficial omega-6 fatty acids. Either way, these essential fatty acids are beneficial to the body and mind.

How Much Fish Oil is Needed? Great question. I hear that question often when talking about fish oil. I found a fairly comprehensive listing of answers to that question from medical doctors and experts in health and diet. One amazing story was about the use of fish oil to treat the coal miner who had suffered brain failure after the Sago mine disaster in West Virginia. I found it at http://www.buy-fish-oil.com/how-much-fish-oil-dosage-per-day-should-i-take/
Thanks for this article. Thanks for investigating these kinds of questions.
